College !! Dorm !! Life !!
What it's like Living in a College Dorm
So as most of you know, I am at Florida State University {Some may know it as the Harvard of the South :) }. Anyway... since like don't live in Tallahassee and decided not to live in an apartment, I am living in a dorm. The whole ass college experience. And I gotta say... it is MOST DEFINITELY an experience. ALSO WARNING: This post is hella long because I gotta vent and I need to know that someone else knows what I'm going through. If you doing want to read it all just read the last two paragraphs. Please and ty.
So for some stupid reason, FSU does their housing assignments weird. You have two choices, either request to room with someone, or just go random. A lot of people room with friends or people they find on social media. The random option is literally you fill out your application and they put you with someone. You don't know who it is until like a week before you move in too!!! You would think that if you went random, you would maybe have like a test to take that asks stuff like how you like the temp in your room, what time you go to bed, your hobbies etc.... you know questions like that to match you up with someone with similar interests or schedules. Buttttt no. FSU doesn't do that. But they really should because lemme tell ya... there are some pretty... interesting people out there...
So I fill out my housing application and decide to go random because I didn't know too many people going to FSU and I didn't want to room with a friend in case for some drastic reason we stopped being friends. Also, I thought it would be a great opportunity to make new friends and stuff. SO... I get my room assignment and its in a really shitty dorm. Like all the way across campus and is rumored to be infested with cockroaches. Yeahhhh no thank you. So as any normal person, I filled out a reassignment request and low and behold, got reassigned! I ended up getting moved to the honors dorm ( and I am NOT and honors student) which is supposed to be really nice! I was so excited! I got placed into a triple suite which is three people in one room who share a bathroom with two other girls. My first thought was YAY I got moved out! But also 5 girls sharing a bathroom ... that could very easily get nasty. But then I thought whatever, it'll be fine.
My roommates and suite mates were the first to contact me. One of the girl sent out a group email and introduced herself. She said she was from North Carolina. She was going to be one of my roommate. I thought cool! She's from out of state! Another email comes in a few hours later and it's my suite mates. Turns out, they're twins. They introduce themselves and say they're from the panhandle. One says she's a pre vet major, likes video game, anime and was trying out for the band. The other twin gave all of her social medias and her astrological sign and said " I can't wait to meet you! I hope we're compatible". Okay so not exactly the best impression if you ask me. But I thought, well maybe they're better in person?? A few days later, another Emil comes through and its my other roommate. She also is from the panhandle and she said she was also trying out for the band. I never send an introductory email....
Move in day!! I am the last to arrive. The twins and one of my roommates had been there for a week now because band tryouts were held before school started. My other roommate, the one from North Carolina had gotten there the night before. So I'm unloading my stuff and getting settled in and the roommate from North Carolina is just staring at me and just kind of awkwardly staring at me. My mom and I go out to run some last minute errands. I go back to my dorm and try to start a conversation with this girl. I tell her I like her decorations on the wall (they're Japanese) and she just comes out with " I'm almost kinda fluent in Japanese. I can write a while paper in Japanese and I went on a foreign exchange program in Japan." I was like oh wow that's cool and was then low key freaked out because that's cool and all but just a little weird thing to say to someone you met like two hours ago. The other roommate, from the panhandle, comes in and I start talking to her. She seemed nice. We were just talking about the school year and everything then she just says "hey, I have a girlfriend on the same floor, is it okay if she comes and hangs here sometimes?" I am just stunned and think what does she mean by girlfriend..? I say yeah sure out of shock and just let it sink in. I go to bed a little freaked out that I am not in my own bed and sleeping in a room with two complete strangers. The next day I meet the twins. The pre vet girl is unique. She got a fish and brought it to the dining hall because she felt bad it was eating by itself. The other twin was nice, she gave me a hug and said she was a hugger(I on the other hand am not).
So as time has passed, I have gotten to know their, little for lack of better words, quirks. I don't see the twins too much because I don't live with them, just share the bathroom with them. The roommate from N. Carolina I have learned, sleeps all the time. Like if she's not in class, she in bed passed out. Mostly because she stays up to who knows when gaming. She is a hardcore gamer. Like has the whole headset, separate monitor, and speaker. It is intense. I try to go to bed at reasonable time each night, but noooo that is her PRIME. She wakes up and talks to all of her mindcraft friends and talks about weird things. Sometimes instead of going to the dining hall, she makes herself black beans and rice. Like wtf.... you are the whitest person what are you doing making Hispanic food..? Like what? Also she keeps her part of the room A MESS! I was cleaning one weekend and was like oh are you going to vacuum the rug and she just looks at me and it like eh its dark enough to hide the dirt. I literally have no words. WTF. Clean the damn rug anyway. OHHH and another thing that I do not understand at all is sometimes when I'd get in bed, I would notice a like white noise sound. I for the longest time thought it was the air conditioner. Just a few days ago I realized IT IS HER SOUND MACHINE!!!! Every night she turns her noise canceller speaker on to 'storm' and it goes on ALLLLL NIGHT LONGGGGG. Like please, I cannot sleep with that blaring. She mostly wears baggy shorts that go down to the knee with her sneakers or crocs. Sometimes on the occasion when she gets out of her bed, she just walks around in circles on the run and then after a few times, just sits on the ground. It's like a cat when they're trying to find the right place to sleep. I don't understand it at all.
The other roommate is a little better. She is mostly normal. She is always doing something. Like in class, with friends or a club or something. The only thing I have with her is that she brings her girlfriend in our room. (I discovered she has a like girlfriend girlfriend) and I want to establish the fact that it not because she's gay that I have a problem with. I am totally okay with that, it s just that I don't want you two in bed together when I'm trying to sleep.. ya feel. Both of them are super nice and stuff its just really uncomfortable sometimes. One day, I even walked in on them under the covers. I bet you can imagine what I'm talking about. I just shut the door and didn't come back for a few hours. The funniest thing is, my other roommate WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE AT HER DESK! she was just minding her own business playing Minecraft and doing her thing. HAGHGAHHA LIKE WTF!
Whenever I go to bed, I close the blinds and when I get up, I open them. Both of my roommates have earlier classes than I do, so it's already past 9 by the time I get up. So I open the blinds because ya know I gotta see and then eat, get ready to go and then go to class to get some education at this money stealing facility that is supposed to help me get somewhere in life. By the time I get back from my classes, both of them are back from their classes and I walk into the room and ITS DARK. All the lights Are off and the blinds are all closed. Like I get it if you wanted to take a quick nap or it its night time and stuff but it will literally be 2 in the afternoon and the room is pitch black and sometimes they're sleeping, or they're just sitting in the ducking dark. I don't understand it at all. I am the type of person who likes the light and can't concentrate or even function when the lights are off. Plus it s really bad for your eyes. AND our room is already so cold son its own, sitting in the dark isn't going to make you any less cold...Anyway yeah I literally don't get it and sometimes if I'm in an annoyed mood, just pull open he blinds and open the window.
The latest encounter I had with my roommates was actually today. We got a sign on our door that people were coming to clean our room today so we needed to remove all of our belongings from the bathroom. I personally, do not keep anything in the bathroom, but everyone else does. They have their towels, washcloths, soaps, sprays and stuff in there. The sign has been on our door for at least two days and I don't say anything because one, its not my responsibility and two, I'm not going to say something and have them take their stuff out too early. I mean I guess I could have reminded them this morning but I did not get a good night sleep and was just being petty and like I said, its not my responsibility I clean the bathroom EVERY WEEKEND ANYWAY even though we're supposed to take turns. So as I'm about to leave for class the cleaning people knock on the door and ask if everything is removed because they have to come in and clean. I turn to my roommates and ask them if they took their belonging out. They both say no and then lay back down. So then I turn back to the cleaning people and tell them it will be one second and then proceed to remove ALL OF THEIR SHIT OUT OF THE BATHROOM. I'm trying to hurry because I don't want to keep these people waiting and I have a class I have to go to. As I'm frantically gathering towels and soap out of the bathroom my roommates JUST DUCKING STARE AT ME!!!!!! I just throw all of the suite mates and roommates crap on my desk and run out. When I get back from class, the bathroom is somewhat clean and none of the stuff if put back in the bathroom!!!!! So be being the annoyed yet nice person I am, put it all back.
So I could go on and on and on about my situation and the things I have to deal with on a daily basis, but you probably don't want to read about that. IO do have to say that it could very well be worse. They could like steal stuff and be like serial killers. They're harmless but just so weird and annoying. If you read all of this them I greatly appreciate you and I need you to know I just needed someone else to know this because I needed to vent. SO MORAL OF THE STORY... don't do random roommate and FSUs rooming system sucks. If you actually found this entertaining and want to read more of my venting and what is annoying me that week I can do like a weekly post of wtf is going down that week. They're be much shorter ofc. okie ty for your time.
Not that it relates, but this is what my side of the room looks like!! :) |

First off I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question in which I'd like to
ReplyDeleteask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and
clear your head prior to writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there.
I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any
suggestions or hints? Cheers!
